Meet my furry gardening assistant: Kukun. Can't be Meet my furry gardening assistant: Kukun. Can't believe I never posted his pic on my feed haha.⁣
⁣
He spends around 2/3 of his day sleeping, but when he's awake he likes to play outside. Luckily we have an open space aka small backyard where I'm trying to uhm turn it into a garden. ⁣
⁣
As a gardening assistant, he has pretty simple jobdesc: to pose and put cute face when I'm taking pic of my plants. Sometimes he did extra miles like chase away rat from a hole we just found few weeks back. He also ate a grasshopper that has eaten my mint leaves.⁣
⁣
But sometimes he can be such an ***hole too. Like earlier today when I was repotting this plant to its new pot, he played with it as if the plant would fight him back. I shoo-ed him away cuz I didn't want him to accidentally eat it as some plants can be harmful for pets.⁣
⁣
Instead of obeying what I said, he peed on my chili seedlings 😐⁣

It’s funny how we can fall in love with somethin It’s funny how we can fall in love with something we used to hate. I never liked Bogor Botanical Garden when I was a kid. Visits to this place were always mandatory like school visit and family gathering (big one, with people I didn’t know well). School tasks, long walk, expensive snacks, uncomfortable shoes and people littering were parts of my memory about this place.

But living in Jakarta changed my definition of what I can call as.. sanctuary. Living in busy city, meeting many people every day made me looking for something different. Morning walk in Kebun Raya Bogor and enjoy the birds chirp company became one of my me time options.

Now I miss this place, and the chicken porridge in front of its gate. Sigh.

Pictures were taken long before covid.

"Do you like veggies so much that you grow them yo "Do you like veggies so much that you grow them yourself?", a friend asked. ⁣
⁣
Well, I don't. If I have to choose between veggies vs meatballs/smoked beef/grilled fish/seblak, veggies definitely won't be my first choice. ⁣
⁣
Then why am I growing veggies in containers and microgreens? I think I just like growing things. I like doing things with a clear purpose, and my current purpose is adding greens into my diet (and decorating my backyard). ⁣
⁣
#Microgreen became my first project because (I thought) it was easy. Here's 5 facts about microgreens - no.3 will make you shock:⁣
⁣
1. You can grow microgreens on a used food box from Gofood or Grabfood. I order food online almost every day so I have tons of those boxes. ⁣
2. Microgreens can be grown on soil mix, cocopeat, rockwool, and other grow media -I haven't tried em yet- like perlite, grow mats or vermiculite. I'm just using available and cheapest option here lol. ⁣
3. Nutrient levels in microgreens can be up to nine times higher than those found in mature greens. (This way I can eat less veggies, but still get more nutrients) 🤣⁣
4. Microgreens are usually harvested around 7-14 days after germination (less possibility for you to be sad seeing your plants died because of pests or over watering). ⁣
5. It also looks pretty tho on your instagram feed. No need to buy overpriced plants if that's the only reason for you to start gardening. Haha. ⁣

Some of the beauties I captured during one of my happiest trips. So yes, these photos definitely were not taken at my backyard garden. 😝 ⁣
⁣
Can you mention names of the flowers? I tried to google the images, but I could only find “garden cosmos” for the second image.⁣

I keep buying pots and plants. Help! ⁣ ⁣ On m I keep buying pots and plants. Help! ⁣
⁣
On my last post, I wrote about my new gardening hobby. I started with microgreens, the easiest one. I wanted to eat something that I plant. Then I thought why not starting hydroponic (I joined a workshop few years back with @garasi_hidroponik). Then I bought simple hydroponic kit from my friend. ⁣
⁣
Then I started propagating plants in water. Then I bought mint plants cuz I heard it was super easy to maintain. I killed my mint plant in less than 2 weeks, twice. ⁣
⁣
I joined online workshops on composting and urban farming. Now every time I see eggshell, I think about organic fertilizer. I even started to make my own fertilizer from kitchen waste. ⁣
⁣
I bought more growing media and mix them based on various references I read. I bought more pots. Long pots, mini pots, box, round, plastic, ceramic, bamboo pots, self watering pot, seedling tray. Last week I bought 14 new pots, excluding pots I got from buying plants. Just today I ordered cute pot cover from Tabalong. And did I mention two wood shelves already? ⁣
⁣
Impulsive I know. ⁣
⁣
But I'm happy to see my baby plants growing well (still alive so far lol), new portulaca flower blooming every day, lavender stopped drying (I think I'm starting to understand her). I'll have red radish microgreen for tomorrow's lunch. I'm pretty sure that my chilli plant will survive the severe aphids attack last week. It seemed impossible at first, throwing myself into a new responsibility that needs daily maintenance. But I'm enjoying it so far. Gardening helped my body to recover faster and also reduced my anxiety about what's happening outside my backyard garden. If you know what I mean.. ⁣

I started to learn new skills during home quaranti I started to learn new skills during home quarantine: cooking and gardening. So mainstream I know, just like millions of other people did too. TBH these are things I've been wanting to do, but my "old normal" self didn't have privilege like time and energy to do such things. I used to be a lazy couch potato on the weekend lol. ⁣
⁣
But now I finally doing it. I wanted to have my own edible garden. So I started to watch gardening videos on YouTube, followed some new accounts here and asked stupid questions to my friends who seems to be social media experts on this field (you know who you are, ladies). ⁣
⁣
I started with microgreens project lol cuz I thought it might be better to start with the easiest ones. My friend @gebyarjanu once said that microgreens is a theory made by impatient people who can't wait to harvest their crops. Ya I think I'm one of them haha. But here's the thing.. Sometimes people need small win when learning new skill or starting new habit. This small win will increase one's confidence level and encourage them to keep on track and try something new. ⁣
⁣
So this is my small win: harvesting my first radish microgreens, and enjoying the baby veggies with Ayam Taliwang from @taliwangbabasavanna. This is just the beginning, or so I think. I don't know yet if I'm committed enough to keep my edible garden, or whether I still can take care of it when the real new normal starts.⁣
